A fly is a kind of insect called Diptera which means "two wings". There are 30,000 different species of flies and they are classified on the basis of their physical features, their habitat, type of food they survive on and how detrimental they can be.  All the species of flies can maneuver themselves into intricate flight patterns, hover and spin, and can even fly backwards. The most widespread species of flies are house flies and animal flies.  Here’s a partial list of some of the species of flies:

House flies:  House flies are the most common of all flies waving in homes, and undeniably one of the most widely distributed insects that can transmit serious diseases like dysentery and cholera. They bear a life span of 15-30 days and breed in decaying vegetation and unhygienic places like dumps, sewers and garbage heaps. Houseflies can’t bite and hence can ingest liquid food or feaces only. They feed on solid food by reiterating saliva onto it; the saliva liquefies the solid material, which is then sponged up with the proboscis.

Animal flies/domestic flies:  Domestic flies, often called "Filth Flies" are commonly found around homes and the areas where domestic animals like cattle, dog, horse and many more reside. Both male and female species of domestic flies primarily survive on blood. They bite painfully and suck the blood by piercing the animal skin with the help of their long and sharp proboscis. Adult domestic flies can live up to 20 days and lay their eggs in places where hay, grass and animals are found.

Blow flies: Blow flies, also known as green or blue bottle flies are larger than common houseflies. They have white heads and bodies with shiny metallic colors such as bronze, blue, green, copper etc. Blow flies are strong fliers and are often found in homes during winter and early spring.  The female blow flies lay eggs in clumps on any organic matter, but primarily on animal flesh. These dysentery or cholera causing flies usually feed on sugary food or plants.

Drain flies: Drain flies also known as moth flies, sewer flies or filter flies have hairy bodies and wings and are black or brown in color. They usually originate in the areas surrounded by water or rotting vegetation and live for a period of two weeks. These non-biting nuisance gnats are usually found resting on walls or ceilings and make squat hopping flights when troubled.  Drain flies don’t bite but can spread bacterial infections as they originate in filthy conditions.

Midge flies: Midge flies are very large in size, have thin, long legs, wings and are often confused with mosquitoes. Midges breed in water and also lay eggs on water. These flies easily get into people’s eyes, mouth or ears and are categorized as non-biting and biting midges. Non-biting midges are found near lakes, ponds or streams and occur in swarms over water while biting midges suck blood from humans, mammals, reptiles, and other insects.
