You make plans, put together your team that you are going to work with and off you go. The only problem is the very plan that you make for success, is the one thing that ends up sabotaging your success. This is why, Planning is for controlled environments. What do I mean by that, let me explain. You can make plans to accomplish something and set everything up just the way you want, but, if the environment is not controlled it doesn't work, and this is why.
Let's say you plan to paint your bedroom, you would get the paint, the brushes,the ladder,the cloth to cover the carpet etc.. and at the end of the day you have a beautifully painted room. But for your business you are not dealing with a controlled environment, you have a contested environment. And a contested environment requires a strategy not a plan, now don't get me wrong planning will have it's place, but, strategy is where your focus needs to be.
Simply because, in business your plan will collide with your competitors plan, and your competitors plan will collide with your customers plan, and the end result is something that nobody planned. What I want to introduce to you is a 3 step process for capitalizing on the strategy involved. The first step is move yourself into the position that gives you the most options. The second step is to adjust to the move or non move of the environment. And the third and final move is look for the opening, then move into the opening that gives you the highest probability of success.
The reason that many people don't succeed is step number 2, when something doesn't work they are stuck. They haven't learned how to adjust,so what happens is you have what's called a mis-match. Now from a mis-match one of two things happen, when people don't succeed they become disoriented and through that dis-orientation the moral starts to drop. They become frustrated, afraid, scared, and they begin to spiral down, they hit the bottom and feel as if the way to recover is to go find another plan. Only to go through that same cycle all over again.
But for those that succeed, they see the mis-match and instead of allowing themselves to become dis-orientated, they re-orient themselves, make the move and the adjustment.
