In recent years, many advances have been made in the manufacturing process of engineered composite structures and affordable automation for composites. Composites can be manufactured and designed in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, including cylinders, cones, triangles, coils, box beams, T's I-beams, flat laminates, ovals and complex geometries. These measurements can run from up to 40 feet long with ODs from 0.020 inches to 60 inches. Advanced Thermoplastic Fiber Placement is a patented technology which uses uni-directional pre-preg material (continuous fiber reinforcing in thermoplastic resin matrix) with pressure and high heat to consolidate the structure 'on the fly' (in-situ) or as it is manufactured. With the need for post-processing (oven cure) eliminated, it allows for greatly reduced residual stresses. This superior technology allows for orienting the reinforcing fiber from 0 degree (axial) to 90 degrees (hoop) and anywhere in between. The result is a well-consolidated structure with excellent continuous fiber distribution and superior wet-out for a high quality, high performance part. In addition, the robotic in-situ process provides the repeatability and accuracy needed for production runs. They offer full engineering, prototyping, proof of concept, development, material selection, initial order and full production capabilities.
