Overview:

Samsung have introduced one of the most compact, lightweight printers of its range. It is able to print approximately 20.000 copies per month making it ideal for small businesses or home use.

Samsung give speeds of 16 ppm in black and white and 4 ppm in colour at a resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi. It has 150 sheet capacity and hi-speed USB 2.0 connectivity. Unusually, it is very quiet (45dBA).

In the same price range is the Brother HL -2035. Again, this is compact at 371 x 361 x 165.5mm.  With an output of 18ppm it is quicker than the Samsung but does not have the colour option. The cost of the black cartridges are cheaper than the Samsung by approximately 5 GBP. It has 250 sheet capacity and hi-speed USB 2.0 connectivity.

The speed of this Samsung Colour Laser Printer is not as fast as you would expect from a laser printer although it did produce speeds higher than those given by Samsung for black and white prints on testing. A fairly high coverage colour print could not make the speed that Samsung suggests and neither could photo-style printing, however, this machine is probably not designed for high colour usage. The quality of the prints are very good but some reviewers experienced a drop off in quality after using for a while even though the control panel shows lots of toner left. Many of the laser reviews were written by previous ink jet owners who had changed to a laser printer because of the expense of ink cartridges and the problem of clogging the printhead. The Samsung CLP 310 Colour Laser Printer seems to be a good choice, the toner eliminating the clogging problem and few complaints about cost as the toner lasts longer than ink jet cartridges especially if you are not a frequent printer. The compact size seems to be a hit at only 388 x 313 x 243mm and fits easily on a desktop.The quick start poster is poor but once past the set up it is an easy to use printer.

The speed and warm up time of the Brother HL – 2035 was a big plus. The print quality was superb and the toners last  about 18x more than ink jet catridges.

Conclusion:

If you only use your printer for documents and have no need of the colour option, then the Brother HL – 2035 is the most economical of the two printers. It seems that changing from an ink jet printer to a laser printer is a big hit with those who have made this transgression.

Overall the specifications between these two printers are very similar apart from the colour option. If you need a small printer for your office without needing an over complicated printer then these two are great contenders.
