Kolkata, India is a fascinating destination with many wonderful attractions and exciting things to do. Once you arrive in Kolkata whether by train, plane, or car you will certainly be ready to enjoy the various sights that make this city a great family vacation.
As you stroll or ride through Kolkata, you will want to visit at least a few of the most popular attractions. On the list of the most popular tourist attractions is the Victoria Memorial. The Victoria Memorial is now a museum home to a large collection of memorabilia from the days of the Raj.
The Church of St John dating back to 1787 is another great stop. Here you will be able to stroll through the cemetery and view various monuments such as the mausoleum of Job Charnock who was the founder of Kolkata.
Fort William is a sight to see, built in 1758 with a fascinating history. The cleared around the fort was at one time full of greenery and trees; however, in order for the cannons to get a good shot at upcoming enemies, the area was cleared. Today along Strand Road, you will see many modern shops and hotels.
St. Paul’s Cathedral is a must see in Kolkata. The cathedral was built between 1839 and 1847 and is home to many beautiful memorials and the magnificent stained glass window by Sir Edward Burne-Jones.
If you have kids along on your vacation in Kolkata, then you must plan on visiting Science City. This is the only museum of its kind throughout India, which is home to a Space Theatre. Some of the wonderful exhibits the kids are sure to enjoy include Dinosaurs Alive, Space Flight, Life in Water, Dynamotion, walkthrough Aviary, a world of Insects and Reptiles, Butterfly Corner, and the Musical Fountain.
The Marble Palace is a breathtaking architectural sight to behold, built in 1835 by Raja Rajendra Mullick Bahadur. As you venture to see the Marble Palace you will be met with a beautiful lawn with sculptures of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, the Buddha, Hindu Gods, and Christopher Columbus. The lawn is a spectacular sight to see but once you walk through the doors you will marvel and the paintings, the gorgeous chandeliers and more.
The oldest museum in all of India is home Kolkata, built in 1874. Here you will find one of the rarest collections of archeological artifacts as well as at the entrance an original Lion Capitol which is the national symbol of India.
