Naples is the capital city of Campania, an Italian South West region best know as for the Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano situated in the east of the city that was declared national park in 1995, but which eruption destroyed the city of Pompeii on AD 79.
Naples (Napoli) is located approximately 149 miles to the south of Rome, surrounded by the islands of Capri, Sorrento, Procida and Ischia that are by themselves world-famous tourist destinations. Naples is the second most populated Italian city and one of the busiest in Europe, which connects to its surrounding islands by ferry, although it also counts with two nearby port towns (Baia and Pozzuoli) that were naval ports of the Roman Empire.
Event thought it is easier get the city via the Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli, located four miles in the North-East of a city plenty of historic buildings such as Castel Sant'Elmo Palace, the Royal Palace and Gardens, and other palaces including the Reggia di Capodimonte, Castel Maschio Angiolino, and Castel dell'Ovo, just to name a few of them.
A city of its size guarantee visitors with a wide range of lodging facilities, from grand tourism hotels and resorts to rural farm houses, bed & breakfast and apartment to lease. When it comes to local transportation, the city provides visitors with domestic and international flights, ferries and cruise ships besides train, car and taxi service when traveling by road, or via the autostrada or metro (subway) moving from one side to other within the city.
As seen in other Italian cities, Naples is a place to admire religious architecture and art visiting the churches of Santa Chiara, San Gregorio Armeno, Gesù Nuovo, San Lorenzo Maggiore, Santa Maria del Carmine, San Ferdinando, San Giovanni a Carbonara, Santa Maria La Nova, Madre del Buon Consiglio, and many others, including the Duomo (Cathedral). The historic Naples downtown was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995,
Spending a relaxing afternoon in the city is as easy as walk towards Piazza Bellini or the Piazza del Plebiscito to take a break for refreshment at the open-air coffee houses. Naples has a worldwide famous gastronomy, which most famous contribution to the world is pizza. Across the city, you can taste Napoli typical specialties such as Neapolitan maccheroni with ragu sauce, spaghetti alla puttanesca, or Mozzarella in carrozza.
However, a visit to Naples is not complete without visiting the ruins of Pompeii, situated in the halfway between Naples and Mount Vesuvius by the side of the Bay of Naples. Besides the National Park, this area counts with the Vesuvius National Archaeological Museum. Although the city of Pompeii was completely buried in AD 79, archeologists have dug the city to rescue the past that was accidentally found in 1748.
As tourist attraction, the ruins of Pompeii attract about 2.6 million visitors each year, but recent concerns about the ecologic impact in this area contributed diversify tourism by opening the access to the ruins of nearby cities such as the Villa Poppaea, Stabiae, and Herculaneum.
