Granite counter tops are the latest look in elite kitchens; of course they are - they are also one of the most expensive counter tops you can find!

However, there are disadvantages to granite, even though it is more expensive, and there are also granite look alike's that could fool a stonemason.

One of the major disadvantages of granite is that it can crack. Most cracking will only occur if other circumstances come into play, for instance, if your new home resettles.

Another instance where cracking can occur is if the granite is not supported with strong enough beams, or if the granite slab is built to span a longer width than it is designed for.

Another factor to take into account is that granite is a porous material and needs to be sealed periodically. If this is not adhered to, it could have serious consequences as oily or acidic liquids could permanently stain the stone.

It is claimed that grape juice will not stain granite; however, you may have to replace your wine glasses more often, as dropping one on a laminate counter top may be safer than letting is drop onto hard rock!

It has also raised concerns over cleanliness because of its open fissure composition; however the general consensus is that proper cleaning erases any problems in this area.

A further disadvantage for some interior decors could be the color limitations. Being a rock it can only be found easily in natural colors although there are brilliant reds and turquoises available if you order in from overseas.

Granite is not only more expensive per linear foot, but it can also accrue more expensive labor costs, as it is more difficult to work with and requires a high level of expertise.

Having said that, there are also advantages, in that if your granite counter top suffers a minor chip or scratch, it can usually be repaired which is an option not available in laminate tops. Even deep chips can be repaired by a skilled stonemason.

The technique is to drill out a circular hole around the chip, thus removing it, and then dropping in the exact size 'plug' to drop back in. Scratches can be sanded and buffed making granite a life-time choice.

For this reason, if you do love the look of granite, ensure that you pay a little extra to get it fitted correctly; after all, this should be the only time in your life that you will be paying for new counter tops that last a lifetime!
