Childhood cancers typical effects are mostly as debilitating and fatal as those of adults. The most common cancers during childhood are tumors, brain and the spinal cord cancerous tumors. These conditions are marked by abnormal cell growth in the child's brain or spinal cord. The brain is the sole control centre for the body processes and its malfunctions ultimately affect, detrimentally, the body's health. Different brain tumor types inhabit specific areas of the brain which hitherto function abnormally.

Some pediatric cancer programs might concentrate on one or two types of cancers and treatments whereas others, such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, treat all types of childhood cancers as well as doing research and clinical trials. Before you choose a hospital to treat your child's disease, you need to make sure that you are going to a hospital that will give your child the best chance in the fight against cancer.

Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy to promote psychological and physical well-being as well as reducing the symptoms of a range of conditions.

It is based on the use of concentrated essential plant oils. Essential oils are the pure essences which are found in herbs, flowers, grasses, roots, seeds, bark, berries and fruits. These are extracted mainly by steam or water distillation.

My neighbor claimed it would be a busy year when she found out I'd have one in kindergarten, one in first grade and one in middle school. But not busy enough, I thought, and again resisted the urge to let her know that I was wondering what my fifth-grader would be needing for school this year.

Financial difficulties associated with a childhood cancer diagnosis can be hard to accept. Some families may feel uncomfortable accepting assistance, but most families need extra support during this time of extreme crisis. Most people want to know what they can do to help, but need guidance on how to give support. Letting others know what is needed benefits everyone.

Then without warning our oldest daughter, Alisa developed some symptoms that, at first, seemed minor. But as the days passed and she didn’t respond to the antibiotics, we knew we were looking at a serious health problem. Little did we know that we would hear the words, “Your daughter has cancer!” From that moment on our lives changed forever.

Complementary therapies can have varied effects from soothing and relaxing to pain relief and also in helping strengthen the immune system. On an emotional level both the parents and the child can feel that they have taken back some of the control by using a complementary therapy. Some patients may believe that it can change their outcome and parents who go this route can feel more motivated to find a cure for their child.

When a child gets cancer, he too would require treatment and one of the most common treatments given for childhood cancer is chemotherapy. Here cancer-fighting drugs are injected into the child so that the drugs can destroy the cancer cells.
